About ACCRA
Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana. It sits partly on a cliff and spreads north over the Accra plains. In 1957, Ghana emerged from British colonial rule, making it Africa’s first sub-Saharan country to gain independence, and Accra was the capital of this newfound sovereignty. This fight for freedom was led by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister.
Accra is the economic epicenter of Ghana and hosts the country’s Stock Exchange, as well as many other large business ventures. It is home to the National Museum of Ghana, with exhibits that reflect the heritage of Ghana from prehistoric times. You can also visit the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Center, explore the traditional Ghanaian markets, attend a French show at Alliance Francaise, visit one of the many art galleries, or just explore this wonderful city and all it has to offer.
Did you know?
Did you know? The capital building is actually a castle. It is called the Osu Castle and was built in the 1660’s by Danish settlers.
The city’s name, Accra, comes from the Akan word ‘nkran” which means ants. This is a reference to all the anthills that can be in the surrounding areas around Accra.
W.E.B. Dubois, an American sociologist and Pan-Africanist, spent his last years living in Accura and is buried there.
