About trostyanets
Trostyanets emerged in the first half of the 1600s as peasants and Cossacks fled Right‑Bank Ukraine after the Battle of Berestechko (1651). They resettled in the Sloboda Ukraine region, forming new fortified towns. The settlement’s name comes from the nearby Trostyanka River.
After administrative reforms, it became part of the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire in 1835.
Composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky stayed in Trostyanets in 1864 while working on The Storm. In 1877, the Russian Ministry of Railways built the Smorodyne locomotive depot, marking the town’s industrial rise. Trostyanets was officially granted city status in 1940.
